French 18th Century Regence Carved Cherry Mantel

About the Item

This classic Regence mantel of cherrywood is beautifully carved in the floriate manner. The French antique piece dates back to the 18th century and offers classic countryside details. At center, we see a dove with a cross hatched background enveloped by acanthus leaves. Further pattern work and acanthus leaves are seen sprawling across the sides and up to the apron. The only thing more beautiful than the carvings may be the deep hue of the cherrywood from the 1700s. 73 1/2" long x 8" deep x 48 1/2" tall; Interior: 59 1/2" wide x 41" tall

18th Century French Fireplace Mantel in Carved Limestone
Located in Dallas, TX
This beautiful antique French fireplace mantel was carved in stone during the late 18th century. It’s quite an unusual example in that falls into the transitional style of Louis XV and XVI. This was a short period of time in the 1700s when the opulent rocaille forms were transitioning into the Neoclassical of Louis XVI. The fireplace has an impressive, deep stance, with a slightly bowed or “galbee” lintel. The bottom of the lintel is composed of a series of rounded and incurved moldings, shaped in the classic crossbow or serpentine form that was so popular in the early to mid-1700s. What makes this piece stand out from other French Louis XV mantels...
