The grey Bardiglio marble frieze is barrel shaped and decorated with garlands of oak leaves and acorns, tied by ribbon in the centre. This is upheld by dogleg jambs carved with egg and bellflower mouldings. The Carrara marble shelf with pencil veining has egg and bellflower mouldings on the bottom layer and bead and reel pattern on the top layer. Bull-nose mouldings of veined Carrara marble frame the aperture, while the entire rests on statuary marble plinths. The combination of grey bardiglio, pure white statuary and veined Carrara marbles in one fireplace, is very particular to the first half of the 18th century. Batty Langley...
