Porphyry Fireplace

About

An extremely rare granito bigio porphyry fireplace of simple architectural design. The jambs with chamfered outside edges, the opening framed by a crisply cut moulding. Provenance: Englethwaite Hall, Cumbria Built by John Thomlinson in 1879 and demolished in 1969, the site now being the location of a caravan campsite. Ryan & Smith have recently bought six period fireplaces including this one, which were removed from the house prior to it being demolished and stored in an outbuilding. Granito bigio porphyry Quarried from the area between Frejus and Dramont, Esterel Mountains, Var, France. Widely used in ancient times by the Romans and for a long time was thought to have came from Egypt, this was proved otherwise during the 1990s. Examples of this rare and decorative stone can be seen in the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and the Basilica of St Peter in the Vatican.
