About the Item

A reclaimed red Chinoiserie painted fireplace. A fire surround as striking as this would suit both modern and traditional interiors alike. It has unique design showcasing style and form. The frieze and jambs are adorned with detailed painted oriental scenes, including buildings, figures and boats. There is a date stamp on the back reading ‘1947’. Chinoiserie, from the French ‘Chinois’ meaning Chinese, was a style inspired by art and design from China, Japan, and other Asian countries in the 18th century. It largely relied on craftsmanship and style rather than accurate portrayals of oriental motifs. Chinoiseries height in Britain dated from 1750 to 1765.
