Turquin marble fireplace in neo-Gothic style

About the Item

Turquin marble fireplace in neo-Gothic styleThis Turquin Blue marble fireplace in neo-Gothic style was executed in the first half of the 19th century, probably around 1840. The lintel is structured by several successive lines of modillions. In the center, a foliage motif evokes 15th century Gothic sculpture. Around a large brace resting on miniature columns with capitals and protruding bases, a continuous pattern of crosspieces unfolds. The squares are carved with a diamond point. The jambs form an overhang; they are made up of two twisted columns on either side. These are crowned with capitals decorated with water leaves supporting an entablature decorated with a frieze of floral motifs. The shape of the capitals, the simplicity of their decoration, the foliage ornament placed in the center of the lintel and the pattern of crosspieces and the brace which hollows out the chimney are all characteristic elements of the neo-Gothic style. Indeed, at the beginning of the 19th century, the arts and decorative arts sought their identity in the styles of the past. These now serve as models and references and the arts make abundant use of these “historicisms”. Neo-Gothic art, in particular, was in vogue in the first half of the 19th century, both in the decorative arts and in architecture, as is evident in our fireplace.
