Italian 19th century white Carrara marble fountain of Taras

About the Item

A charming and high quality Italian 19th century white Carrara marble fountain of Taras. This wonderful and most charming fountain depicts the son of Poseidon, Taras, as a young man riding a dolphin. Taras sits atop the back of the handsome dolphin with his legs to each side and the dolphin's tail curving upward as water splashes around them. He displays a joyous expression while his wet curly hair is tucked back behind his ears. In Greek mythology, Taras is the son of Poseidon and a sea Nymph. After being caught in a shipwreck, Taras is rescued by his father with the help of a dolphin. The dolphin transports Taras to the shores of southern Italy, where a city is named in his honor. On the coinage of the ancient city of Taranto, the son of Poseidon is depicted on a dolphin, sometimes with his father's trident in one hand; the same image is depicted on the modern city emblem.
