Authentic Vintage Tolix A56 Armchairs in Original Paint

About the Item

Designed by Jean Pauchard in 1956, son of Xavier Pauchard who founded Tolix in 1925, the A56 armchair or “fauteuil” in French has become one of the most influential pieces of 20th Century metal furniture design. A true innovator in French industrial design, Xavier Pauchard, the son of a zinc roofer, began producing household items that integrated a major innovation in France: the use of hot dip galvanizing to protect iron from oxidation. Tolix designs have become iconic worldwide and are widely loved and imitated for their sleek industrial design and practicality. These, however, are authentic A56 Chairs in original red and yellow paint and in lovely vintage condition. Perfect in the garden or inside where a splash of color is desired, they make wonderful dining chairs or use them for cocktails paired with our authentic Tolix Model 55 Table (Stock # FTRE 1023) also listed for sale.

  • Set of Six Rare Authentic French "Model A" Tolix Chairs in Original Blue Paint
    By Xavier Pauchard, Tolix
    Located in Woodbury, CT
This wonderful set of six Tolix Model A metal dining chairs is in excellent condition and features its original lovely dark blue paint with a bit of surface rusting. Originally designed in 1934 by the founder of Tolix, Xavier Pauchard, this chair became a huge hit with bistros in France because of its design and durability (it was the first furniture dipped in molten zinc to withstand rusting). The original Model A chair was modified in 1956 to improve the chairs’ stacking feature, and the original back slat design was changed from a flat panel to one with an embossed design. These chairs with their flat back panel pre-date 1956 and are much more rare than those with an embossed back. Such is the iconic status of the Model A chair that examples are on display in New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Paris’s Pompidou Centre. Model A chairs make an exceptional design statement but are also a good and very comfortable practical choice as dining chairs for regular use. Perfect around a rustic wooden dining table...

  • Set of Six French Multipl's Chairs in Stunning Mottled Paint
    By Joseph Mathieu
    Located in Woodbury, CT
This rare set of six French 1940s Multipl’s metal dining chairs is in excellent original condition and features an amazing mottled painted surface of grey, green, red, and blue. Designed by Joseph Mathieu and made by Pierre Benite in Lyon, these chairs are an iconic part of French Industrial Furniture history. Multipl’s was, in its day, the main competitor to Tolix, although Multipl’s did not survive. Each chair was hand-pressed in huge industrial presses and galvanized before being hand-welded together. They make an exceptional design statement but are also a good and very comfortable practical choice as dining chairs for regular use. Perfect around a rustic wooden dining table...
