"Four Seasons" Sculptural Wrought Iron Dining Table by Dereck Glaser
Custom commissioned rectangular fer forge dining table by noted blacksmith, Dereck Glaser. who crafted by hand and Hammer the remarkably realistic botanicals which adorn this table. Each leg depicts a certain season reflected by a tree. Winter is a pine, spring is a maple, summer is an oak and fall is an apple, measures The glass measures 96" x 48" The base, including the rounded corner detail, measures 44.5" x 92" From Dereck Glaser, Blacksmith: "The commissioning family contacted me in 2008, they were in the midst of a significant restoration and renovation of their home and wanted an heirloom quality dining table to seat up to 10 people for holidays and built adequately enough to last a century. Discussions of design began, their love of nature and the beautiful natural surroundings of their home. We arrived at the concept of Four Seasons, a different tree for each season, Maple for Spring (sugaring) Oak for Summer (shade), Apple for Fall (harvest) and Pine for Winter (snow) I began designing and each tree was to have appropriate bark textures for its variety, realistic leaves, and its proper fruit, nut or seed. All of the steel is hand forged, the large steel pipe for the legs was all hand-hammered to create the strenuous shape of a trunk, all the limbs were hand forged and textured differently with special hammers, the leaves were all cut from thick sheet steel and hand forged with various veining techniques to reveal their species to the viewer. Each acorn was forged in a special closed die made especially for this project. Crafting the botanicals was arduous and labor intensive. Each pine cone took over three hours to make. The Apples are hand forged from steel pipe, yes they are hollow from forgings, even the stem was part of the piece of pipe used to make the apple from. The most challenging part were the Maple seeds, in my almost 30 years of artisan blacksmithing I have never had to create a maple seed. But studying some live models and developing a technique led to these awesome looking copies. All of the assembly of the leaves, seeds, nuts, cones, all the limbs and knots and trunk work is all skillfully MIG welded together and each weld finished to blend it into nature. Another difficult issue to deal with was the lack of structure in the table design. It was intended to have an appearance of all the limbing of each adjacent tree, mingling and tangling with the other to tie them together, but in building it this way left me no structure in the mid span length-wise to support the massive pipe legs, I therefore developed a branch looking truss system running underneath the long flat sections. I pre-arched the entire table, as you see on an empty flat bed trailer on the highway, pre-arching and then welding the truss system in underneath, once the pre-arch was released, the table sprung out and was flat as well as sturdy now, sturdy enough to hold the enormous piece of beveled glass at several hundred pounds. The entire table was buffed, selectively polished, selectively sanded and coated with tough satin clear enamel. I have over 260 hours in the creating of this piece."
