About the Item

A steddle or staddle stone from the West Country of England from the late 1700s, featuring a conical base mounted with a mushroom-shaped cap of quarried stone. Use outdoors or indoors to create a contemporary or rustic English-garden effect. They are often used in England to line drive-ways. A wonderful garden feature, steddle (or staddle) stones were originally used as supporting bases for granaries, hayricks, and game larders. The steddle stones lifted the granaries above the ground thereby protecting the stored grain from vermin and water seepage. In middle English steddle, staddle or stadle is stathel, from old English stathol, a foundation, support or trunk of a tree. Perfect for a garden or patio or outdoor area.

Antique English Limestone Staddle Stone
Located in Dallas, TX
An 18th-century staddle stone crafted from limestone and originating from England, this piece consists of two separate components: the base and the cap. When stacked together, they form a complete staddle stone. Traditionally, staddle stones served as sturdy supports for granaries, hayricks, game larders, and similar structures. By elevating these buildings above the ground, they allowed for air circulation to prevent rot, while the cap ensured that the building and its contents were out of reach for mice and other vermin. While you may still find some staddle stones serving their original purpose in England—particularly in the Cotswolds, where most of our antique staddle stones...
