Fred Schumm Stone Mountain Sculpture
Located in Palm Springs, CA
A very nice signed stone sculpture by the noted NJ artist Fred Schumm.
The following article was written about him in 2007. He passed away at 85 in 2010.
Share
A U.S. Marine in World War II, sculptor Fred Schumm has dedicated his life to art and finds inspiration everywhere.
Fred Schumm, artist-in-residence
November 29, 2007.
Fred Schumm does not view life through rose-colored glasses.
He doesn't have to.
Schumm, Rowan University's artist-in-residence, is a former U.S. Marine who lived through some of the most horrific battles of World War II. He served at Peleliu -- two months of carnage on a tiny Pacific atoll where 12,000 perished - and then four long months on the bloodied isle of Okinawa.
Since then, Schumm, 82, has mostly tried to see life's beauty. It's sort of like how sunlight, warm but ordinary to the naked eye, is refracted into myriad, impossibly beautiful combinations of color when viewed through a kaleidoscope.
And, like sunlight, he finds art everywhere.
"Inspiration is all around but mostly I'm inspired by the ancients," Schumm said recently. "I love Prehistoric African carvings, the works of ancient Greeks, Japanese and Chinese. I especially love Eskimo work."
The celebrated sculptor loves Eskimo work so much he once hitchhiked from his home state of Colorado to Alaska just to see native carvings.
"I wanted to see the TOTEM poles," he said. "The Alaskan Indians were fantastic artists."
Schumm, artist-in-residence since 2003, works with various hardwoods, stone, even metals. A studio in which he works at Westby Hall has pieces in various stages of completion, from an eight-foot-tall, stainless steel sculpture he calls "Aviary" to a solid, six-foot log of black...

Set of Three American Midcentury Painted Concrete Mushroom Garden Ornaments
Located in Atlanta, GA
A set of three American Midcentury painted concrete mushroom garden ornaments with traces of red, turquoise and yellow paint and nicely weathered appearance. Introduce a dash of whimsy and a sprinkle of nostalgia into your garden with this set of three American Midcentury painted concrete mushroom garden ornaments. A testament to the charm and allure of simpler times, these captivating mushrooms flaunt traces of red, turquoise, and yellow paint, embodying a spirit that is both playful and timeless.
Each mushroom in this charismatic trio presents a unique size, thoughtfully curated to imbue your garden with a delightful sense of natural irregularity. The gentle arch of the mushroom caps combines with the sturdiness of the concrete, evokes a tender balance between grace and resilience.
As if kissed by time itself, the mushrooms boast a beautifully weathered appearance. The faded hues of red, turquoise, and yellow paint dance across their surfaces, whispering stories of sunny days and gentle rains. These traces of color are like echoes of laughter and joy, remnants of the garden parties and gentle mornings they have witnessed.
Position these endearing mushrooms amidst the flourishing foliage, where they can engage in hushed conversations with the flowers, or let them grace a pathway, guiding wanderers with their gentle charm. These ornaments are not just decorative pieces; they are carriers of dreams and small wonders...
