About the Item

Provenant de la somptueuse Villa Salviati en Toscane, ce manteau de cheminée a été réalisé lorsque le couple Arthur Vansittart et Diana Crosbie a rénové une partie du décor intérieur de la villa entre 1844 et 1854. La villa, importante œuvre de la Renaissance italienne du XVe siècle, fut louée par les Vansittart en 1836 avant d'être achetée en 1844 avec tout son contenu. Ils vendirent finalement la villa en 1854, après avoir déménagé de nombreux tableaux et une grande partie du mobilier à Foots Cray Place dans le Kent. Notre manteau de cheminée date donc de la période d'occupation de la villa une fois achetée, entre 1844 et 1854. Il pourrait faire partie d'un réaménagement de certains intérieurs de la villa. Un album de vues photographiques de la Villa Salviati datant de 1900-1920 montre notre manteau de cheminée toujours en place dans l'une des pièces.
