About the Item

A pair of lovely Ridgeway stoneware cachepots and stands with neoclassical decoration and three scenes in cartouche. The design is done in white relief on dark ground and is crisply modeled. The central scene portrays a classical offering to the Gods, with graceful figures gathered around an altar in a timeless expression of devotion. Rich in symbolism and beautifully rendered, it reflects the Neoclassical fascination with the ideals of ancient Greece and Rome. Another cartouche captures a charming procession of five putti in joyful ritual—one bearing a torch, another making an offering—imbuing the cache Pots with a sense of lightness and festivity. The final vignette, depicting a seated youth with a lamb and a loyal dog, is especially tender. It symbolizes innocence, charity, and the virtues of rural life. Together, these cartouches form a captivating story—each one a small masterpiece of Neoclassical imagination. Above the cartouches is a band of anthemion or palmette, a classical design element found in Greek Revival and Neoclassical ornamentation. Across the top edge is a band of "pearls". Dimensions: Diameter 5" x 4" tall Condition: Excellent Price: $860 Background of Ridgway: The Ridgway factory began production around 1792, when Job Ridgway established a pottery in Shelton, Staffordshire. This date marks the formal start of what became one of the most prominent Staffordshire potteries of the 19th century. In 1802, Job's sons, John and William Ridgway, joined the firm, and it became J. & W. Ridgway. The firm became known for its high-quality porcelain and pottery, with John Ridgway gaining a Royal Warrant in 1851 as "Potter to Her Majesty."
