Louis XVI Painted and Gilt Decorated Tole Cachepot, c1780

About the Item

Louis XVI painted and gilt decorated tole cachepot, c1780, decorated in polychrome with a Watteauesque or Angelica Kauffman Neoclassical scene of figures and putti in a landscape setting, all painted on a cream ground, banded with a finely painted border, raised on floral decorated gilt feet. The paint appears to be original. This cachepot is related to a rafraichissoir with similar decoration attributed to La Petite Dunkerque No. 42, part of a district in Paris known as La Petite Pologne, a group of the varnished metals Manufactures in Paris which was the most famous. The representation of the putti and fruit is very typical of this group of makers. The liner is later. N.P. Trent has been a respected name in antiques for over 30 years with a large collection of period furniture, art and decorative accessories.
