About the Item

A Pair of White Statuary Marble Garden Planters. Carved in carrara marble, each surmounted by a circular shallow basin with egg-and-dart carved rim. The underside carved with beadwork and gadrooning. Supported atop a pedestal carved with three intertwined putti holding their arms aloft. The circular spreading socle carved with beadwork and leaves. Italy, circa 1900. Provenance: Robert William Hudson (1856–1937). Villa Paloma, Monaco These marble planters can be seen in a 1927 photograph of the terrace of the gardens at Villa Paloma, overlooking Monaco, as published in 'Jardins de la Côte d'Azur' by Octave Godard. The Villa Paloma had been bought in 1925 by the Englishman Robert W. Hudson, whose father had founded a fortune from the manufacturer of soap-flakes. The Villa now serves as the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.
