Patinated Cast Iron Biomorphic Planter 'Cala' By Bradley Bowers

About the Item

This curvaceous, biomorphic sculptural cast iron planter has a rich, varied "living" patina stemming from the natural rusting of iron. Suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Additional Information: The form is inspired by the Calabash bottle gourd and their traditional use as containers. This stunning, sizable piece can be left outside on the grass with no maintenance and will continue to grow and evolve as a work. The planter is suitable for indoor or outdoor use - for indoor use, planter is available immediately. For outdoor use, 2-3 week lead time reflects installation of drainage holes. This piece is currently available to view in-situ at our gallery, which is located in an historical 19th century townhouse on the Upper East Side of Manhattan - no appointment necessary. This piece was originally commissioned for a 2021 exhibition entitled 'Cast Iron', in which eight artists from around the world were tasked with digitally designing exclusive editions of furniture, lighting or functional decorative objects, which the gallery would then facilitate production of, with the help of a fourth generation foundry in Virginia. Each of the digital pieces would be materialized in cast iron, the quintessential symbol of the 19th century. The focus of the exhibition was to marry the material’s origins with the new-age digital hyper-connectivity of design ideas. On the design process of this piece, the artist writes: "Huddled and sagging under the weight of their contents, Cala is a trio of vessels that form unique compositions of soft curves and deep shadows. I designed Cala to remove itself from the idea of Front, Back, Left, Right and instead to create a series of vignettes from every angle." — Bradley L. Bowers Bradley L. Bowers is a New Orleans-based designer, who explores the dynamic overlap between rapid-prototyping and artisanal craftsmanship. The studio uses contemporary digital-modeling tools in unison with traditional craft techniques to achieve objects and forms that redefine the norms. After earning honors and advanced degrees from the Savannah College of Art and Design, the Atlanta native founded his studio to bring the worlds of art and design together. He creates site-specific new media art installations, pop-up experiences, and bespoke pieces for fashion brands, art institutions, and private clients. As well as exhibiting work in Miami, New York, New Orleans, Atlanta, and Milan, his work is in a variety of permanent collections.
