About the Item

This stone Buddha statue is thought to have been created during the Tenmei era (circa 1781-1789) in Japan's mid-Edo period. Although difficult to read, the characters "Tenmei" can be seen on the stone surface, indicating that it was cherished by the people of that time. Stone Buddha statues have been carved all over Japan and placed in a variety of locations, such as village entrances, forks in the road, crossroads, and temple grounds. They were deeply rooted in the lives of ordinary people, serving as prayers for safe travels, symbols of calm and salvation, and the tranquilization of human souls. This piece is a carving of an adorable Kannon Bodhisattva with clasped hands, with a striking soft expression and rounded form. While many stone Buddha statues from the Edo period are slender, this one has a low head-to-body ratio, giving it a somewhat approachable and endearing impression. Some Chinese characters are carved on both sides of the stone, but they were difficult to decipher. The expression and condition of the stone convey that it has been treasured over the years. It weighs approximately 37.8 kg and measures 28 W x 22 D x 53 H cm. It is able to stand on its own, making it the perfect garden ornament or guardian deity for your front door. This simple yet warm-hearted stone Buddha is a soothing piece that quietly speaks to the prayer culture of the Edo period. Why not use it as an accent piece in your garden or any space?
