About the Item

This is a small but very presentable stone lion statue believed to have been made in China. It was probably made in the 20th century, probably after the Republic of China period, and is made of sandstone, a stone material with a characteristic rough texture. The natural texture of the stone combined with the depth of the carving gives this gem a timeless beauty. Lion statues have long been popular in China as guardian animals that ward off evil spirits and symbolize wealth and authority. Placed in pairs in front of the gates of palaces, temples, and the residences of the wealthy, they served to ward off evil spirits and impurities. This culture came to Japan and evolved into the unique “komainu” (guardian dogs) found at the entrances of shrines and temples. The komainu, which are arranged in the shape of A-Un, are still a familiar symbol of protection from evil spirits and guardianship in Japan, and still live on in our daily lives. This work was probably made by skilled craftsmen who produced many of the same type at the time. However, upon closer inspection, one can see the individuality in the carving, especially in the facial expressions, the spiral patterns in the mane, the expression of tight muscles, and the geometric patterns on the base, all of which show delicate craftsmanship. As for the condition, there are some age-related changes that indicate that the doll has spent a long time outdoors. In particular, there is a missing ball that is believed to have been in the mouth, as well as partial loss of the bell on the lower jaw and chest. There is a liquid stain near the right hind leg. There is also a very thin hairline crack near the shin of the right front leg, but there is no structural problem and no problem for appreciation or decoration. Please refer to the photos for details. It is relatively compact in size, weighing approximately 16.3 kg, but can be moved by a single man. As an entranceway or indoor interior, it brings a sense of dignity and quiet protection to a space. Especially when incorporated into a modern space or an interior that blends Japanese and Western styles, it can create a unique balance and atmosphere. Of course, it will also look inherently attractive when placed in the eaves or in the garden. We also have another lion statue with the same design. This product is the one circled in red in the photo. This piece offers a glimpse of traditional Chinese art. Please consider it as an object that adds a special story to your space. Great Wood Carving Lion Figurine / 1868-1920 / Rare Item
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
This looks like an old copperware, but it is a wood carving work. It is glossy because it is finished with black lacquer. It is a very delicate and beautiful sculpture. The expression of the lion is cool. Also, the sculpture on the tail is wonderful. It is thought that it was carved on wood such as Japanese cypress. The name of the engraver is also engraved. The name "Kichitaro" is engraved. I don't know the details of this person. There are also small cracks and defects. There is a loss in the lower part of his right ear and part of his tail. And there are lacquer cracks and wood cracks. This is an old one, so there is something like this. Also, in the case of Japanese and Chinese lions, a ball is attached to the left hand, but this is missing. However, it is a work that is quite impressive. It is a rare item...
