Life-Size Terracotta Erato Statue, 1 of 9 from the Apollo Inn, London
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
Dating from 1898, this impressive life-size statue of Erato once decorated the façade of the Apollo Inn in Tottenham Court Road, London. Modelled by John Broad for Doulton and Co, this Erato statue stood alongside Apollo and the other 8 muses on the exterior of the Apollo Inn public house from 1898 until the building’s demolition in 1961.
Located on the corner of Tottenham Court Road and Torrington Place, London’s Apollo Inn was designed by English architect Charles Fitzroy Doll (1850-1929). When the building was demolished in 1961 for an extension to the Heal’s furniture store – which remains on the site to this day – this statue of Erato along with Apollo and the other 8 Muses were removed.
This life-size statue of Erato was sourced from a garden in Chiswick. Known as the Greek goddess of lyric poetry, she is seen as she is often depicted wearing a crown wreath and holding a lyre.
Of the other 8 Greek Muses, the whereabouts of 4 is known.
Euterpe is located in St George’s Gardens near Kings Cross railway station, presented to the borough by Ambrose Heal of Heal’s London. Clio was reputedly bought by architectural historian, Nikolaus Pevsner, who placed it in his garden in Hampstead. Thalia and Melpomene are both in the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia and appear alongside Apollo in John Davis’s book ‘Antique Garden Ornament...

Important and Impressive Pair of 19th Century Bronze Sculptures
Located in Cesena, FC
Important pair of sculptures depicting Achello and Helena (mythological famous figures) in bronze, made with the lost-wax technique, dating from the 19th century (second half of the 1800s but made in the Empire style).
Standing on a quadrangular column base in golden robes, they hold magnificent cornucopias (a symbol of prosperity and wealth). The heads are adorned with laurel wreaths.
Of great aesthetic impact given both by the impressiveness of the figures and the measures
(245 centimeters high) as well as the bases that support and complement the bodies, richly decorated with floral festoons and anthropomorphic friezes that stylistically recall the eclectic style typical of the second half of the 19th century.
Prominent in the decorations are large acanthus leaves, feet and lion masks.
This large pair...

Solid Limewood Statue of St. Christopher, Germany, circa 1930
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-carved from limewood in Germany, circa 1930, this four-and-a-half-foot tall statue depicts St Christopher carrying a young Jesus across a river. The legend states that Christopher (who was considered to have size and strength), was instructed to serve Jesus by assisting travelers with crossing a perilous river. One day a young child asked for help, and after safely reaching the far shore, Christopher complained about the child being heavier than the whole world. It was at this point that the child revealed he was Jesus before...

French Reconstituted Stone Statue of the Greek God Pan, from Vincennes C. 1950s
Located in Dallas, TX
Cast in reconstituted stone, circa the 1950s, this statue of the Greek god, Pan, rests on top of an Ionic order capital, standing over six feet tall. Discovered at a chateau in Vicennes, France, less than five miles east of Paris, the statue was part of an outdoor installation, as indicated by the buildup of moss and lichen. The stone was cast with a gray hue, but has developed a speckled patina of white, brown, and ochre.
Considered a half body sculpture...
