Perna Krick 1909-1991 Young Siren (1937). (2 of 3). bronze. Exhibited Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts 1938, Whitney Museum, National Sculpture Society’s Exhibition, 1940. One of the three has been on view as the central feature of an art tile “fish pond” at the Central Library of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore since cast. The subject is taken from Greek mythology and may have been influenced by Gustav Dore’s The Oceanids (The Naiads of the Sea). In early mythology, these creatures were caretakers of children including those of Greek Gods. The Naiads were associated with freshwater, and the Oceanids, correspondingly the sea. After the Abduction of Persephone by Hades, the Oceanids were transformed into the well known and dangerous (mature) Sirens. A “Young Siren” in the context of Greek mythology is a protector of young children and of freshwater sources. This sculptures placement as a central feature of a freshwater fish pond installation in a public library to delight, protect and edify children is particularly thoughtful. And, it underscores the importance of examining many sculptural works of art in the context of their intended architectural function. The influence of Art Deco and of Modernism is readily apparent almost a century after creation. The patina is original and the work is in fantastic exhibition quality condition. This work stands on its own as a sculpture and can be a feature of a room when placed upon a pier or console table or on a pedestal in an exhibition. And, it would obviously be a remarkable central feature for a children’s themed room or garden especially as part of a tile fountain installation at a public institution or private home. Perna Krick and husband Reuben Kramer founded Pioneer House, the first licensed, desegregated art school in Maryland. It is now the Baltimore Art Center for Children. Perna’s sculpture career twice suffered auspicious starts at particularly inauspicious times. Her studies and earliest work collided with the Great Depression and her celebrated second stage was derailed by World War II. Her artwork in ensuing years focused on painting, presumably as the cost of materials was significantly less. The legacies of Perna Krick and spouse Reuben Kramer live on through their work and an annual scholarship at the Rhinehart School of Sculpture. Like “Young Siren”, Perna was a protector of children (and of artists).

The Zodiac pen tray is a fantastic holiday gift for the Cancer or Pisces who loves Tiffany, Arts and Crafts or simply fine living.
