About the Item

This small stone Buddha dates back to the Edo period (around 1603–1868), and the moss and weathering on the surface of the stone quietly tell the story of time’s passage. Made from stone with a rich natural texture, it was hand-carved by the skilled hands of ancient Japanese artisans. This stone Buddha represents Jizo Bosatsu, a revered figure in Buddhism. Jizo Bosatsu is known for his compassion, protecting people from hardships and disasters, particularly children and travelers. In Japan, Jizo has long been a beloved figure, often depicted as a monk with a shaved head, offering a gentle expression that exudes warmth and comfort to all. The expression of this Jizo Bosatsu is soft and gentle, giving it an approachable and endearing character rather than a highly detailed, realistic portrayal. His small hands are pressed together in prayer at his chest, a posture that brings peace and warmth to the viewer, naturally evoking a smile with its tenderness. The mossy texture, which suggests the statue has been placed outdoors for many years, further enhances the nostalgic charm of this piece.
