Antique Carved Solid Block of Marble Wash Basin, Sink From Mediterranean Region
Located in Chicago, IL
Although this may look like a holy water font from an ancient Italian church, we believe it’s probably a marble wash basin, or sink based on the fact that it has an old drain hole. You can clearly see that the marble sink was mounted into a wall and it could be Roman, Turkish or even Middle Eastern. Sinks or wash basins are thought to have started in Ancient Roman bathhouses. Romans actually had warm water in bowls around the bathhouse in order to wash one’s face and hands. During the 1500’s, the wealthy would have wood washstands...

Italian 17th Century Solid Hand Carved White Carrara Marble Fountain or Basin
Located in Firenze, IT
Entirely hand carved in a solid block of precious white Carrara marble, this antique Italian late 17th century-early 18th century fountain or basin is sculpted with elegant floral and foliate patterns typical of Baroque period of Genoese area. This generously sized half moon basin features a wonderful hand sculpted floral carvings on front, drawing the eye around its satisfyingly smooth arc and its charismatic form, while the back is raw, the ancient hand chisels can still be seen. Even the original iron pins which probably supported a back splash are still visible. It takes a high level of skill to carve such a hard marble into a wonderful demi lune shape such as this. Different shades of white due to varied patina from age allows it to go with practically any color scheme. This antique marble sculptural and architectural piece was originally a garden element, it is now perfect for both indoor or outdoor use. Elevate your interior or your garden to a new level of elegance with this one of a kind piece suitable for both public spaces and private homes. Whether placed in the master bathroom or in a powder room as a wash sink...

Ancient Carved Stone Wash Basin Hundred's of Years Old
Located in Chicago, IL
Originally, a sink was nothing more than a basin. In the early 1700s, most homes came with a washstand, which acted as the bathroom sink. A washstand was a simple fixture consisting of a deep bowl and a small table. Often a pitcher was placed next to the deep bowl. In a way, the pitcher acted as a faucet, providing water to the static basin. Ancient wash basins history is thought to have started in Ancient Roman bathhouses. The Romans had warm water in bowls located around the bathhouse to wash one’s face and hands. Typically, they were made of lead for common folk, or carved from large pieces of stone for the wealthy. Common historical belief is that bathroom sink basins seem to have originated from those Roman washstands. By the 1500’s, the wealthy would have wood washstands...
