The frieze having curved panels of verde antico, overlaid with foliate scrolls of statuary marble. The centre plaque which is dog leg in shape depicts Flora, goddess of flowers and the season of spring, flanked by swags of oak leaves and acorns. The full tapering columns of verde antico marble are fluted and capped with finely carved ionic capitals. This chimneypiece is considered to be one of the finest and most important 18th century chimneypieces to come to the market in recent years. We have acquired it from the Chrysler Museum of Art Norfolk, Virginia. Walter P Chrysler Jr., renowned collector of antiques and Fine art, purchased the chimneypiece from the well-known Mayfair antiques dealer Stanley J Pratt Limited, 27 Mount Street, London. A very attractive and high quality mid-18th century Irish mantelpiece of the finest richly colored Breccia Violetta, veined Carrara and white statuary marbles. The cornice shelf protrudes over the jambs at each end, the lower part of the cornice being made of veined Carrara and the top layer of statuary marble. The statuary central tablet is carved with a classical lidded urn and swags of drapes tied with bows. The frieze panels and corner blocks are of Breccia Violetta marble, whilst the architrave moulding is of veined Carrara. The Breccia Violetta jambs are fronted with veined Carrara marble columns, these are tapering and capped with Doric order capitals. They stand on rounded statuary socles and statuary marble plinths.
