Antique French Zinc Oeil De Boeuf Window Frame, Circa 1890

About the Item

Sometimes referred to as a dormer, this zinc oeil de boeuf window frame is from France, circa 1890. First used during the 17th century, the dormers would typically be seen on upper levels of sloped roofs of French chateaux. The interior would contain a large glass pane, allowing light to penetrate dark rooms such as attics. The oval opening of our dormer has a recessed molding along the interior edge. A pair of volute scrolls form an offset molding along the outer edge, encircling the top half of the dormer. At the top is a ball finial with a small plinth that features cavetto molding. Our antique French zinc oeil de boeuf can still be used architecturally as a window surround. A mirror can also be installed in the interior opening, allowing the dormer to be used as a decorative mirror for a study, living room, or bathroom.
