About the Item

Hand carved Newar window frame late 19th century, Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. The Newar are the original inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley, and have long been renowned for the carved decoration of their houses. This is an old somewhat rustic example of a traditional window frame, fashioned and carved by hand. It can be mounted on the wall as an architectural element bringing with it a bit of the flavor of life in a traditional Newar home. With a bit of effort it could be turned into a wonderful facing for a mirror. We have reinforced the joints and strengthened the bottom brace and an eroded area on the upper back side of the frame. We have also attached a wooden piece to the upper backside to facilitate mounting on a wall.. An accompanying horizontal wooden piece on which to hang the frame is also included. Condition: The frame is in fair to good condition. It is structurally strong and fully stable. It is an old piece, and the wood shows signs of some checking and erosion; as well as of ancient insect damage -- all issues which have been addressed, the wood stabilized, and any bugs long since eliminated. Dimensions: 45.5 inches wide (at its widest point at the base) by 51 inches tall x 5.5 inches deep Notes on dimensions: The width at the top is 42.5 inches. The opening is approximately 23 inches wide by 29 inches tall, to the top of the arch.

Repaired: We have reinforced the joints and strengthened the bottom brace and an eroded area on the upper back side of the frame. Additions or alterations made to the original: We have added two wood pieces for mounting - one attached near the back top of the frame, and another to be attached to a wall. We also shored up an area of weakened wood on the upper back. Wear consistent with age and use. The frame is structurally strong and fully stable. The wood shows signs of some checking and erosion; as well as of ancient insect damage -- all of these issues have been addressed, the wood stabilized, and any bugs long since eliminated.
