19th Century French Hand Painted Tole Grape Basket from Bordeaux

About the Item

Decorate a wine cellar with this antique, metal grape harvest basket. Created in Southwest, France circa 1870, the unique basket has its original leather back straps and is hand-painted with colorful leaf and crown decor, including "Chateau Gruaud Larose", a well-known red Bordeaux vineyard in the Saint-Julien region. The classic tole basket is in excellent condition and flaunts a beautiful, rich grey patina with yellow and beige accents. This piece would make a beautiful statement in a wine cave, or simply hanging in a kitchen filled with dry flowers. Hook on the back for easy installation. Château Gruaud-Larose is a winery in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. The property has a younger history than most of its cohorts. Its origins date to 1725 and the knight Joseph Stanislas Gruaud. The property was called Fond-Bedeau, and was administered by two Gruauds; one a priest and the other a magistrate. The magistrate, the Chevalier du Gruaud, died in 1778 and his part of the property was deeded to Joseph Sebastian de La Rose, who renamed this property Gruaud-La Rose or Gruaud-Larose. The wine produced here was classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. Measures: 29" W x 17" D x 24.5" H.
