Fine George II Silver Basket

About the Item

An absolutely wonderful example of the classic George II period (1727-1760) fruit basket with its finely detailed cast and applied mounts and hand-pierced sides illustrating all the elements that were popular at that time. The beautifully moulded border decorations incorporate grapes and vines along with floral detail, bound by scrolling motifs with Bacchanalian masks at both ends. The cast scrolling handle is adorned with cherub busts and floral detail, and the four shell pattern feet are held by sprays of wheat denoting its alternative use as a bread basket. In the centre of the basket is a family coat of arms with Baron's coronet. The piece is in exceptionally good condition and a substantial weight at 65.5 troy oz (2037g).
