Monumental French Vineyard Grape Picker's Harvest Hotte Hod Tall Wooden Basket

About the Item

A most impressive antique country French vineyard grape picker's hotte / hod / harvest backpack basket with beautifully aged warm rustic worn patina! Created in Provincial France in the mid-19th century, part of the traditional old world industrial winemaking process, this large wooden basket was once carried on the vineyard workers back and filled as he/she picked grapes off the vines during harvesting. Featuring rustic handmade solid pine slatted construction with forged iron bands and fittings, the leather back straps lost to time, having a sculptural form with tall tapering bow front straight back and rounded sides, in the original red paint finish, dated "1867", with the vineyards logo and "L A" painted in white. Dimensions: (approx) 31.5" High, 19.75" Wide, 9.25" Deep, 17.75lbs Great original unrestored antique condition with nicely aged patina. Strong, sturdy, stable, structurally sound. Loss to leather straps. Wear consistent with age and indicative of industrial use, adding to the sophisticated antique character and charm!
