About the Item

This fine pair of large late 19th century Russian baskets or hampers made in mahogany, brass inlaid panels with fabric and embroidered taping trim come from the estate of Mrs. John Gutfreund. Made in an open work manner with solid mahogany ribs that have then been inset with brass trim panels that are interspersed with flat roundels. The open work ribs are then filled from the back with a fine broad cloth creating a closed container from the sides. Formed as an hourglass shape the central section is bisected by a broad raised brass banded border, the center of which is also fabric treated with a gold embroidered blue broad cloth. Mr. & Mrs Gutfreund held the highest potion in the social order of both New York and Parisian life.
