Danish Modern Marianne Starck for Ma&S Large Wall Decor Women in a Row, 1960s

About the Item

Rare mid-century Danish wall decor designed by Marianne Starck for the famous Danish ceramic workshop Michael Andersen & Søn (MA&S) on the island of Bornholm. Made ca 1960s. The decor with young ladies in a row is handpainted. It is made with Persia technique, a special craquelee technique which was developed at Michael Andersen & Søn in the 1930s by David Andersen. They won a gold medal for this at the Worlds Fair in Brussels in 1935. The firing has a large influence on the color and how the colors melt into each other giving every piece a unique expression. This motif is very rare to find. Marianne Starck (1938-2007) was the artistic leader at Michael Andersen & Søn for decades. She was from Northern Germany and came to MA&S in the 1950s. She stayed there until it closed in 1993. She was a very innovative and versatile artist who made many iconic designs for the ceramic workshop. Fully marked on bottom. Marked with MS for Marianne Starck. Wears original papersticker from Michael Andersen & Søn Very good used condition. No chips, cracks or repairs.
