Tall Vase by Marianne Starck for MA&S Persia Glaze Colorful Decor, Danish 1960s
About the Item
Rare mid-century Danish tall vase designed by Marianne Starck for the famous Danish ceramic workshop Michael Andersen & Søn (MA&S) on the island of Bornholm. Made ca 1960s.
It's decorated by hand showing a young woman three times around the the whole corpus of the vase. It's decorated with the so-called Persia glaze which gives a vivid colorplay and makes every piece unique.
The Persia glaze has a crackle effect and was developed at Michael Andersen & Søn in the 1930s by David Andersen. They won a gold medal for this at the Worlds Fair in Brussels in 1935.
The firing has a large influence on the color and how the colors melt into each other giving every piece a unique expression.
Marianne Starck (1938-2007) was the artistic leader at Michael Andersen & Søn for decades. She was from Northern Germany and came to MA&S in the 1950s. She stayed there until it closed in 1993. She was a very innovative and versatile artist who made many iconic designs for the ceramic workshop.
