Eric James Mellon Nude on Horseback Studio Pottery Bowl 1971
About the Item
A very fine and unique stoneware studio pottery pedestal bowl decorated with a nude woman on horseback by renowned ceramic artist Eric James Mellon (British, 1925-2014) and dated 1971.
Trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London in the 1940’s Eric is more renowned for his figurative work, often including nudes decorated with ash glazes.
This wonderful unique stoneware bowl stands raised on a narrow round cylindrical foot with a wide round flared top with a hand painted scene of a nude riding a horse decorated in tones of blue and brown tenmoku and with an elm ash glazed finish. The underside of the bowl is decorated with concentric bands and the foot bears artist signature marks and is dated 1971. The bowl is also marked with a title ‘ded.Rhoda’ with a description of the glazes used.
Provenance: from the collection of a private gentleman and originating from the UK art market.
