Excavated painted earthenware from South America/Ecuador or Colombia

About the Item

In ancient times, the Nariño culture flourished in the area around the Colombia-Ecuador border, and it is believed that this polychrome pottery emerged from that culture. The front and back of the vessel feature different polychrome designs that are highly geometric and beautiful, giving it an impression reminiscent of woven fabric. This decoration technique is known as the "negative technique." Using this method, patterns are painted onto the surface of the vessel with resin or wax, then a dark-colored pigment or slip is applied. When fired, the wax or resin melts away, leaving the original clay color to stand out in a whitish tone. It is likely that this vessel was created using that technique, with the red paint added as a final touch. This pottery is estimated to have been made between approximately 700 and 1500 AD. Since it is an excavated item, there are repaired sections where it was broken. However, the overall pattern remains beautiful, and there is no issue for display purposes. One of the distinguishing features of Nariño culture pottery is the circular pedestal at the base. Additionally, similar vessels are exhibited in Japanese museums, and I have included these as reference materials. The pedestal has a transparent fishing line attached, allowing it to be hung on the wall for display. This piece will add color to any room and can be enjoyed time and time again. Since I hope more people will appreciate the beauty of antiques, I have set the price reasonably. Size: Diameter 19.8 cm, Height 7.6–8.8 cm Weight: 500g
