Gold and Brown Wood Fired Hand Built Bowl with Swirling Shino Glaze
About the Item
A spectacular example of the possible results from a wood firnig. This small hand built ceramic bowl is truly unique, from the rustic hand formed shape and rim to the surface treatment. It was wood-fired in an "Anagama" kiln in Upstate New York, a traditional Japanese kiln. These kilns are made of heavy brick, built up a slowly slanting hillside with several firing chambers. Wood must be continuously added to the fire chamber over several days and nights. Heat and smoke from the ash swirls through the kiln, landing almost randomly on the work. Depending on its location in the kiln and any glaze that was applied, the effects can vary widely. This piece has a traditional Shino Glaze applied to the interior (making it water tight) with some dipped and dripped around the rim. The shino captures the ash and creates a highlighting effect. The rest of the surface, deep reds and browns, is another gift from the firing, mostly uncontrollable and unpredictable! The three white marks on the bottom of the piece show the remnants of the dry clay, called "wadding", that is placed under every single pot in the kiln to keep it from sticking to the shelf - a feat in itself! Anagama kilns are rare in New York and are typically fired once or twice a year. They are quite large, take days to load and unload, and use an enormous amount of wood and human energy. Obviously this piece cannot really be ordered as it is, as during a wood fire so many things can be different. However, the shape and size of this bowl CAN be ordered. A glaze can be applied but one cannot expect a similar outcome to the one listed. Please call to discuss.
