A Large Indian Urli, c. 1910

About the Item

This shallow bronze bowl is an open fire cooking vessel known as urli or uruli, used throughout southern India for preparing ayurvedic medicines and cooking large quantities of food for gatherings and ritual offerings. Cast of bell bronze using the lost wax method, the basin features two loop handles, a constricted neck banded with simple ring molding, and a rounded underside. It has been fitted with a metal stand. Over a century of use has resulted in a darkly patinated surface finish, with some verdigris oxidation on the interior. A full-size specimen, this bronze vessel is wonderful as a tabletop centerpiece, shallow planter, or water basin for floating flowers. It can also be planted.

  • Carved Teak Indian Temple Column
    Located in Chicago, IL
This monumental Indian column once supported part of the entrance or courtyard cloister in a grand mansion. Originally part of a series, this individual column is all that remains. The piece comes in multiple stacked segments, distributing the weight of the original structure from its floral motif capital through its stone plinth. Only one is available. Origin: Rajasthan, India, 19th century. During the colonial period, Indian traders amassed huge fortunes and some of that wealth found its way into mansions and palaces. A hundred or more years later, many (if not most) of these structures are obsolete or the fortunes of their owners have dwindled. Many are in urban areas in which land is very valuable now and aggressively sought for multi-storey buildings. Old single-storey mansions are often disassembled piece-by piece and the parts sold on the international market. India is one of very few countries that have the labor supply to decommission old structures in this meticulous way. The column could be used in an architectural, load-bearing way or as a free-standing decoration...

  • Rare Pair of 1950's Modern Anglo-Indian Arm Chairs
    Located in Chicago, IL
These Anglo-Indian lounge chairs date to the early 1950's and were made in the Mid-Century style. During the British Colonial period and in the two decades after independence, much Indian furniture was made following British or European styles. However, these "Indian Modern" pieces were original designs and simpler and sturdier than their European counterparts. Exquisite native hardwood were used, such as Teak and Rosewood and woven rattan was substituted for upholstery, which grew musty in the humid Indian climate. Lines and details were simple. Over time, Indian craft became very sophisticated and design became more and more creative. Whether the vintage furniture...
