About the Item

Radiant 1920s Murano Soffiato Glass Compote by Vittorio Zecchin A stunning example of early 20th-century Italian glass, this vibrant red footed bowl or large compote was hand-blown in Murano in the 1920s by the celebrated designer Vittorio Zecchin, a key figure in the revival of Venetian glassmaking in the modern era. The shape is elegant and classical—timeless yet distinctly Art Deco—with proportions that would have made it a natural centerpiece on a lacquered sideboard or round dining table of the period. Crafted using the delicate Soffiato technique, the glass is thin, luminous, and appears to almost glow from within. The rich, cheerful red is especially captivating in natural light, giving the piece an otherworldly vibrancy. Zecchin, known for his collaborations with MVM Cappellin and his deep appreciation of Renaissance and Byzantine aesthetics, brought a painter’s eye to his glass designs. His works from this period were celebrated for their refined silhouettes, pure colors, and artisanal integrity—a reaction against the heavier styles that preceded them. The bowl is in very good condition with one small, original manufacturing flaw: a stable 4mm crack visible near the base caused by a small piece of kiln brick—common in pieces of this age and technique and noted for transparency. This piece has been part of my personal collection for eight years, cherished for both its beauty and historical significance. It will be double boxed and professionally packed for safe shipping. A rare and joyful object that bridges classical form with modernist clarity—perfect for collectors, designers, or anyone who values early Murano artistry at its finest.
