Large And Unusual Shell Shaped Antique Meissen Porcelain Bowl, 19th Century

About the Item

A deep and finely articulated ribbed scallop shaped early 19th century serving bowl in the pattern known as Blue Onion, which originated at the Meissen factory in Saxony in 1740, a European version in cobalt and white of popular Chinese porcelain patterns. The painting on this dish omits the bulb shaped elements that gave the pattern its name, instead focusing on the large and very gracefully delineated flower elements. Marked with the crossed swords of Meissen and an empressed 'I' mark of the period 1814-1824. Good antique condition, moderate wear with some small rim flakes, roughness to edge, mostly to the lower part of the serrated edge of the shell. H: 2 5/8 W: 10 1/2 D: 9 1/2

  • Count Bruhl's Tailor, 19th C. Bisque Porcelain Goat And Rider By Vion Et Baury
    Located in Free Union, VA
A very finely modeled French bisque porcelain figural group, incorporating a mix of glazed and natural bisque porcelain. Dating to the late 19th century, this is an excellent example of the work produced by modeler Charles Baury who worked in Paris for the firm of Jean Giles (founded in 1837) until Baury took over the manufactory in 1868 and a few years later moved it to Choisey-le-Roi. A periwinkle embossed maker’s seal cipher “VB” for Vion et Baury is found on the underside. The figures and costume are inspired by the whimsy, beauty and absurdity frequently found in earlier 18th and 19th century Meissen porcelain compositions, and the historical figure, Heinrich, Count von Brühl...
