Pedestal Bowl by Wood & Brownfield Ironstone large diameter Ptn 328, circa 1845

About the Item

This is a rare, large ironstone pedestal footed bowl or centrepiece made by Wood & Brownfield at the old Clews Works, Cobridge, England hand painted in pattern No. 328 and dating to the mid-19th century, circa 1845. Large ironstone pedestal bowls are rare. This bowl has a circular shape with two moulded side handles, a wavy rim and raised on a good pedestal foot. The bowl is decorated inside and outside in there Chinoiserie pattern No. 328 with a large flower vase by rocks with an exotic yellow bird, smaller vase, fence and many flowers, in hand painted bold enamels with gold gilded detail and an intricate border pattern which is repeated around the outer bowl and pedestal foot. The rim is painted in an ochre edging, all in the Chinese taste. The base carries a clear "W &B" printed Royal Arms mark with lion & unicorn and printed with Warranted Real Ironstone China, with the pattern no. 328 hand painted below in red, all dating this piece to circa 1841-1850. This is a lovely, decorative display piece in its own right and would make a good table centrepiece, but could equally be used as a serving bowl for the dining table.

    By Josiah Spode

This is a very decorative large bowl, produced by the Spode factory, circa 1820. The bowl is circular with an everted rim and on a raised pedastal foot. This is pattern number 3875, the chinoiserie decoration being transfer printed in cobalt blue under-glaze, then carefully and beautifully hand-painted in bold colored enamels with additional gilding over-glaze. The pattern shows a large Jardiniere beside a vase, both holding colourful flowers beside a tree, all in a garden setting with a distinctive floral border. The pattern is on the inside and outside of the bowl with hand gilded gold highlights. The pattern is in the Chinese taste as produced by many of the English potteries of the time, to compete directly with the large import of Canton or Chinese export porcelain from China. The bowl is fully marked to the base, with "Spodes New Stone...
