About the Item
This is a very good early Mason's ironstone pottery soup bowl or deep plate hand painted in the Fence, Blue Leaf & Lilac pattern, produced by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1813-1820.
The plate is circular with a notched indented rim.
This large soup bowl or deep plate is well decorated in one of Mason's rarely seen patterns called "Fence, Blue Leaf and Lilac" pattern. The pattern is hand painted, over-glaze in rich cobalt blues, greens and burnt orange, all in varying shades, possibly over an under-glaze printed outline and is illustrated on Page 90 of Mason's Collectors' Club Pattern book.
The base has the single line impressed mark " MASONS PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA" which is recorded as being one of the earliest impressed factory marks indicating a date of circa 1813-1820 as ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period.
This bowl exhibits the quality and boldness of the hand painting that is seen on the early Mason's pieces and exhibits little sign of wear from use.
