Georgian Mason's PAIR of Mugs Ironstone in Chinese Scroll Ptn very rare, Ca 1818

About the Item

These are a matching PAIR of Ironstone pottery mugs made by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England and is decorated in the Chinese Scroll Pattern, fully stamped and dating to the earliest period of Mason's Ironstone production, circa 1818. These pair of mugs are very rare and even better for being decorated in one of Mason's superb people patterns. The mugs are well potted, being slightly tapered towards the base and with loop handles having a thumb spur. The decoration is one of Mason's chinoiserie people patterns called the Chinese Scroll pattern, which tends to be a rarer pattern, showing a group of oriental (Chinese) figures in a garden setting, all within a scroll, which is surrounded by a rich border pattern with flowers and precious objects in the Chinese taste. This pattern was produced in different colour-ways with richly hand painted enamels, over-glaze in green, blue, orange, yellow, puce, pink, orange and white all in varying shades. The vase stand in the central scroll of the pattern is hand gilded. Both mugs have further decoration to the inside rim around the inner top. The pattern is illustrated on Page 75 of a Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-1848, produced by The Mason's Collectors Club. The base of each mug has the Masons large crown and banner, one of which is colour washed in green. This printed large crown mark is recorded as being probably the earliest printed mark, indicating a date of circa 1813-1820, making this jug one of the earliest pieces of Mason's, as their Ironstone was only produced from 1813, which is late George 111 period. Overall, a very rare PAIR of Mason's ironstone Mugs in a highly decorative pattern.
