"Mariner's Bowl", Rare Art Deco Masterpiece w/ Neptune by Waugh for Steuben

About the Item

A masterpiece of Art Deco design, and one of the greatest engraved glass pieces created anywhere in the world in the 1930s, this very rare low bowl depicts a series of figures illustrating oceanic mythology and exotic lands. The central compass points toward a reclining Neptune figure on the upper or North end of the bowl; to the east and west are stylized Hippocampus figures; and the south features a reclining nude African female figure and palm tree representing faraway lands. Sidney Waugh designed the bowl for Steuben glass, and the engraving -- probably by Joseph Libisch -- is extremely fine. The Mariner's bowl was designed in 1935-37, and only a few examples were sold over the years; a 1976 Steuben catalogue indicated that it was available then for $9,750. Other examples of the Mariner's bowl are held by the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Museum, and Newfields, formerly the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The bowl is signed just under the Neptune figure. The bowl retains its original Steuben box.

  • "Europa & the Bull, " Art Deco Masterpiece in Engraved Glass by Waugh for Steuben
    By Sidney Waugh, Steuben Glass
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of world's greatest achievements in Art Deco artisanry, the famed "Europa and the Bull" spherical bowl was designed by Sidney Waugh and executed by the Steuben Glass division of corning glass in the 1930s. Waugh had been hired by Steuben as its chief designer in 1933, and over the next 20 years he designed a wide array of bowls, vases and other glass objects that were decorated with high-style Art Deco figures executed via copper-wheel engraving. Arthur Amory Houghton, grandson of the founder of Corning, took the Steuben division in a new and modern direction when he hired John Monteith Gates to be its managing director and Waugh to be its first designer. Steuben became known as one of the globe's great modern glass companies, and from the 1930s-1950s, Steuben rivaled Orrefors in Sweden and Lobmeyr in Austria for the finest engraved Art Deco glass work...
