About the Item
A mid-20th century Murano glass bowl, or trinket dish, crafted in Italy during the late 1950s on the famed island of Murano.
This wonderful glass bowl is attributed to Dino Martens for Aureliano Toso and features a square form with a circular base. It is crafted from jet-black glass, layered with colourful glass speckles, vibrant red canes, and shimmering copper aventurine inclusions.
The exterior presents the glossy simplicity of the black Murano glass, while the interior reveals a striking display of abstract artistry.
The bowl’s inner surface showcases a harmonious combination of decorative elements: copper aventurine merges with splotches of brown, beige, and white glass, accented by bright red murrine canes. These details are juxtaposed against a layer of transparent turquoise glass interspersed with shiny silver metal inclusions. The interplay of these materials creates a dynamic and textured visual effect, exemplifying the innovative craftsmanship for which Dino Martens and Aureliano Toso are celebrated.
Measuring 12 cm in both depth and width, with a height of 6.5 cm, the bowl is in good condition for its age and use. A small flaw is present in the centre of the interior, likely an unpolished pontil or a glass bubble that has recently burst. However, this does not diminish the overall appeal of the piece. The exterior shows minor superficial scratches consistent with age-related wear.
