Organic Swedish Bowl in Elm Root Wood, 1940s

About the Item

Rare organic wooden bowl made in Sweden in the 1940s in solid Elm root wood. The bowl is the perfect decorative touch for any interior and can be used for things like nuts or just as a decorative object in your interior. The bowl is very typical wabi Sabi style but also reminds you of pieces from the Almue period. The concept of Wabi-sabi developed from Zen Buddhist philosophy sometime between the 13th and 15th centuries and has three founding principles: that nothing is ever permanent, perfect or complete. The teachings show that life is best enjoyed when we accept these imperfections. Beauty is found in the balance between the harmony and tranquillity of wabi and sabi, the fleeting nature of time and decay. Everything is perfectly imperfect. The words wabi and sabi were originally two separate words and cannot really be translated into English. The closest translation would have been “wabi” referring to the loneliness of living in nature and “sabi” meaning lean or withered. Through the passage of time, the words were brought together to represent a traditional Japanese aesthetic ideal that understood emptiness and imperfection as steps along the path to enlightenment. And so wabi-sabi style as we know it now was created, usually condensed into one concept as “wisdom in natural simplicity”. This bowl is the perfect decorative object for any interior from the typical Wabi Sabi style interior to the more traditional Scandinavian interior or a more Art Deco interior. Measurements are following 15 cm wide, 17.5 cm deep and 5.5 cm tall.
