"Polo Player, " Footed, Shallow Dish with Polo Motif, Art Deco, by Gregory

About the Item

Beautifully glazed in shades of white and sand, this rare footed dish depicts a polo player reaching out to strike the ball. The primary glaze has a beautiful mottled appearance, and the artist -- Waylande Gregory -- very cleverly represented the ball by making a small round recess in the dish, formed by inserting a narrow stick into the soft clay before firing. Gregory was a renowned WPA sculptor and innovative ceramicist and produced a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums.
