About the Item

Large Mid-Century Modern brutalist art glass bowl by Pertti Santalahti for Humppila Glass in Finland. Made ca. 1970s. The colors move from a brown earth like color to a warm amber color and finally to transparency like ice. The surface is very rough and structured like large broken pieces of ice. Very dramatic. The bowl wears the original Humppila sticker with the text: Humppila Handmade in Finland. It is hand signed to the bottom: "Pertti Santalahti" and "Humppila Finland" The bowl is in a very good vintage condition. No chips, cracks or repairs. It weighs approximately 3400g. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pertti Juhani Santalahti (1941 Helsinki – 2015 Humppila[1]) was a Finnish designer. Santalahti studied at the Arts and Crafts Institute in the department of sculpture. He graduated as a designer in 1962. Companies for which he has designed are Kupittaan Savi, Nuutajärvi Glass, Alsterfors Lasitehdas (Sweden), Arabia ceramic factory and Hackman Iittala. In the years 1971–1981 he was the product developer of the Humppila glass factory and since 1974 the artistic director of the factory. Santalahti's work has been exhibited in joint exhibitions, among others at the Finnish Museum of Glass, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tampere and the Marjatta Gallery in Oslo. His works are in many collections, for example in Finland in the art collections of the city of Helsinki, the Glass Museum of Finland, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tampere, the Museum of Art and Industry and abroad in Kunstsammlungen der Veste Coburg, (Coburg, Germany), The British Crafts Center in London.
