Approximate size: 15.75 (h) x 15.75 (w) x 1.5 (d) in.
A large slightly-footed tin-glazed maiolica charger depicting a scene of frolicking cherubim beside a stream and shooting the arrows of eros. Executed in the manner of the 16th century Fontana workshop from Urbino, in the istoriato style. The plate was probably one of a set likely produced by the Cantagalli factory in Florence during the 19th century. This decorative plate Can be used as a surface décor or wall-mounted. Incorporated wire suspension loop already intact on the verso.
Condition commensurate with age. Minor chips and scuffs along outer margins and minor loss to in the upper right ground of the scene which has been carefully in-filled and overpainted.

The present dispenser was either used as a water or wine cooler or possibly for washing hands. The original lid is lost-to-time, yet its provincial beauty remains attractive and sublime. The present example—baked with white enamel and decorated with a lovely hand-painted polychrome lattice and floral theme—is warm, elegant and rustic. The curving linear form of the flowers subtly recall the influence of Japan’s Kakiemon style present in France during the Rococo period yet is still indebted to the earlier influence of Italy’s prolific maiolica workshops.
