Dragons in Compartments Porcelain Platter & 3 Plates Worcester Hand Painted 1820

About the Item

The large platter and three plates in the Dragons in Compartments pattern were hand-painted by Chamberlains Worcester in England between 1800 and 1820. The pattern is an English interpretation of Chinese export porcelains from the Kangxi period. It features mythical beasts alternating with vases on a table within lappet-shaped panels. This pattern, also known as Bengal Tiger or Kylin in Compartments, was first made by Worcester in the 18th century. At its center, the platter has an armorial crest showing a lion and a stag. Around the crest is the motto "Quis Prohibeat Sperare Meliora," 'which translates as "Who Will Expect Better." The platter was commissioned to commemorate the marriage of Thomas John Parker of Canbury House, Kingston, Surrey, to Elizabeth Peters Washington Palmer of Whitton Place, Middlesex, on 24th October 1796. At their center, the pair of plates also show a stag on a crest. Marks: One plate from the pair has the Chamberlains Worcester mark of the period on the underside (see image). Dimensions: The platter 19.25" x 15", the plates 8.5" diameter Condition: Excellent with some gilt touched in on the platter Price: $7,100 Background of Chamberlains Worcester: Robert Chamberlain and his son Humphrey were responsible for decorating and gilding the porcelains made in the original Worcester factory during the 1770s and 1780s. In 1793, they opened their porcelain factory in Worcester. The painting and gilding of the Chamberlains Worcester factory met the highest standards of porcelain manufacturers during the period, and the factory enjoyed royal patronage. Japanese and Chinese 18th-century wares inspired several of the English porcelain manufacturers of the Regency period. Chamberlain's Worcester, in particular, produced many oriental-influenced patterns. Background of armorial crests with a stag: The stag represents one from a family of noble and chivalric background who has performed his duty to the king. A stag on an armorial crest is often associated with vigilance and is sometimes seen as a protector of the forest.
