George II Square Salver Made in London by Matthew Cooper I in 1729
About the Item
A very fine George II Square Salver made in London in 1729 by Matthew Cooper I
The Salver stands on four unusual shaped cast feet and the raised, stepped, rim displays incuse corners. The centre is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a foliate scroll, shell and strap work cartouche. The Salver is in excellent condition, with a fine colour and crisp marks on the reverse. The back also shows its original engraved scratch weight. Matthew Cooper was a specialist candlestick maker who had been apprentice to Joseph Bird. It is unusual to find Cooper's mark on anything other than candlesticks. The Arms are those of Burton with Langhorn in pretence. Robert Burton married Katherine Langhorn on 31st January, 1705, at St. Botolph, Aldersgate, London. He was then a Founder in Cow Lane, but when he died in 1753 he was described as of Somersby in the County of Lincolnshire. His wife died in 1742 and is buried at Somersby.
