18th Century French Porcelain Plate by Dagoty with Children at Play

About the Item

Made circa 1785, this plate features a deep cobalt blue border that is beautifully gilded with a dramatic geometric pattern. The burnished gilt is a hallmark of Dagoty porcelains. Inside the dramatic border is a wonderful scene of children playing leapfrog. The formal border contrasts with the informal scene of children at play. This juxtaposition is characteristic of 18th-century French porcelain; only the French produced pieces with this particular level of sophistication. In the last decade of the 18th century, Romanticism significantly influenced Dagoty porcelains. Anecdotal scenes, indoor settings, and depictions of children's games replaced the neoclassical subjects that were previously favored. These new themes convey a more human quality and create a much less rigid atmosphere. The borders continued to show neoclassical designs. The factory was in the Rue de Chevreuse, Paris. The Paris retail shop of Dagoty was on the Boulevard Montmartre. Products were of high quality with hand-painted backgrounds in attractive colors and lavish gilding.

Large Blue and White Porcelain Soup Tureen French 18th Century

Decorated with an elegant design of delicate blue cornflower sprigs, this soup tureen was made by Arras Porcelain in Arras, France, in the late 18th century. The cornflower sprigs, handles, and border edging are decorated with beautiful deep twilight blue enamel. The makers of Arras Porcelain specialized in porcelain painted in this entrancing blue called "Bleu d'Arras." The color of the porcelain body is creamy white. The combination of the creamy white ground and the blue decoration is splendid. Natural forms like the tree branch handle and the blue cornflower decorations were the height of French fashion in the last quarter of the 18th century. Made at the Arras porcelain factory of the Delemers family circa 1780, the tureen and its stand are marked in underglaze blue.
