Mid-Century Modern Brown Stoneware Rubus Bowl by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand

About the Item

This exquisite stoneware ceramic bowl, designed by iconic Swedish artist Gunnar Nylund, was crafted by Rörstrand in the 1960s. Part of the distinguished "Rubus" series, this bowl (model 1) is a mottled matte Birka brown/white glaze, and a textured surface. A superb example of Scandinavian Modern design, this decorative vide-poche bowl showcases a ripple-textured surface highlighted by earthy and white-colored glaze. The solid flat-based bowl is signed with Rörstrand's "R" and three crowns, along with "GN" for Gunnar Nylund, and is numbered with the Rubus series model number 1 and "Sweden" on the base. They share models with the Alpina (blue/gray glaze) and Rubus (blue/brown) glaze. Renowned for his timeless designs, Gunnar Nylund created many classics for Rörstrand, with the Rubus series standing out as one of the most celebrated collections. These stoneware bowls and vases, known for their robust forms and mottled blue/brown glazes, reflect the elegance and simplicity of Scandinavian design.

Stoneware bowl by Gunnar Nylund, Rörstrand, Sweden, 1940s
By Rörstrand, Gunnar Nylund
Located in Stockholm, SE
Beautiful stoneware platter in a leaf shape by Gunnar Nylund. Purplish brown glaze with contrasting bright blue areas. Gunnar Nylund was one of the most influential ceramicists and designers of the Swedish mid-century period. He was Rörstrand’s creative leader from 1931 until 1949 and as such propelled the artistic work at the factory and served as mentor to younger artists, among them Carl-Harry Stålhane and Hertha Bengtsson. Nylund was a dedicated functionalist, who brought ideas of democratizing stoneware and creating beautiful, qualitative and affordable everyday items for the people to Rörstand in the mid-1920s. The factory had at the time lost its former leading market position, but Nylund’s efforts gave it a great reboot. He designed ceramic kitchenware...
