Napoleon III Bronze Fruit Bowl with Mythological Decoration
About the Item
Carved of patinated bronze, this 19th century fruit bowl boasts a mythological scene with three winged Cupids wearing vine leaves, holding a cup and grapes. They are leaning against the central foot, which is richly decorated with vine leaves and clusters of grapes. It supports the bowl embellished with a Medusa head in the center, surrounded by a border adorned with grapevines. The decor refers to the festivals of Bacchus, god of wine in Greco-Roman mythology, that celebrated the beginning of the grape harvest, and where satyrs and Bacchantes drank wine or engaged in uninhibited dancing.
